POETRY FILM: The Kitchen Door Blues

I designed an animated visualization of the poem by Tennessee Williams, read by Eugene Burger.

I have always found this poem fun and humorous to recite. After recording my friend reciting it, I began to imagine it as a biographical story, or memory, being told by him. This made me think about the old silhouette cutouts people used to have made for their loved ones. Using silhouettes seemed to fit the mood and complement the simplicity of the poem. I made the initial silhouettes using Illustrator, then animated them and added paper texture in After Effects.

Animation Process

I decided to go for a handmade, stop-motion animation look. Using After Effects I refined the vectors I imported from Illustrator, added a paper texture to them, added light and shadow to give depth, and animated each vector image as a scene.
